I’ve have been a big fan of Barker’s of Geraldine’s fruit syrups for a long time and have been lucky enough to find my favourite blackcurrant syrup in the supermarket isle right here in Australia. They have been a god send in my pregnancy as in both pregnancies I seem to crave soda to quench my thirst aside from water and I really don’t like drinking anything full of sugar and artificial ingredients.
Barker’s of Geraldine are a well-known and long-established New Zealand family-owned brand. They first started in 1969 producing wine on their beautiful farm in Geraldine looking out to the most spectacular view of the Southern Alps and have since expanded to employing around 150 locals and producing world famous syrups, jams, chutneys and condiments. Over the past few weeks I have been trying out a few of their other amazing flavoured fruit syrups.
Due to an oversupply of blackcurrants in 1981, the Barker family set out to make their first non-alcoholic drink, which resulted in the beautiful naturally-squeezed blackcurrant fruit syrup which lives in my fridge everyday. They have since expanded to producing a wonderful range of fruit syrups including the Lemon, Honey & Ginger flavour and Squeezed Rhubarb with Raspberry & Rosehip.
I like to have all my syrups with soda water to give it that bit of fizz and I thoroughly enjoyed both of these flavours just as much as the Blackcurrant. The Lemon, Honey & Ginger is quite a nostalgic flavour whereas the rhubarb offers something really lovely with a unique twang. Both flavours were equally as refreshing as each other and the perfect choice for when you’re feeling like a delicious drink that isn’t water!
I love these fruit syrups during pregnancy because it’s so important for me to avoid preservatives and artificial additives. Barker’s of Geraldine fruit syrups have no preservatives, no artificial sweeteners and no added colours or flavours, which means I can feel totally comfortable enjoying one with my dinner.
I think everyone needs to have a bottle of Barker’s of Geraldine fruit syrup in their fridge and I would totally recommend it during pregnancy if you’re craving something other than water. Of course, they do contain natural sugars from the fruit but there are also reduced sugar options as well.
Although produced & sold in New Zealand, a few of the flavoured fruit syrups are also available in Australian supermarkets like Coles. Otherwise you can jump online here to http://www.barkers.co.nz/ and purchase online for shipping to both New Zealand & Australia. Enjoy!
