I know I don’t need to tell you all this because you would already know yourselves, but life is BUSY! Whether you work full-time or maybe even overtime, where you’re a working mum like me who struggles to sit down until 9pm at night or if you’re a stay-at-home mummy juggling the household chores and looking after the kids, life is full-on. I’m sure it wasn’t always this way and unfortunately as much as we would sometime like time to slow down, our hectic schedules don’t allow for it. The result of this means that finding time to make dinner is hard.
By the time we get home from picking up the kids, to then having to cook dinner, we end up sitting down to eat by 7-7.30 and it becomes a rush to get the kids ready for bed. Not only that but the meals we have to make are usually quick and often boring, and we miss out on a lot of the favourites because they take time. Something that I used to really enjoy had become a chore that I dreaded. I also find myself at the supermarket daily picking up extra ingredients needed for that night’s meal because it is too hard to plan every night out when we do our big grocery shop. I usually forget a heap of ingredients or I’ll plan on making something and change my mind because of pregnancy cravings. With a little man to nourish as well,I want to give him the best food possible to protect his health and that can be tough when you’recooking at the last minute.
Enter HelloFresh. The food delivery system that is changing lives or at least helping people live theirs! Last Monday, I received my first delivery of HelloFresh and I must say it was perfect timing.
At 16 weeks pregnant, my exhaustion had really started to set in, and by the time I got home from picking up Finn from daycare I was not in the least bit interested in cooking or at least thinking about what to cook for dinner.
I got home to this big box of food. When I opened it, beautiful bright colours greeted me from the range of fresh vegetables. I unloaded everything and was amazed to see how much food their actually was and the quality and sizes of the everything.
I had received a family box which intends to feed 4-5 people (2-3 adults and 2 kiddies) and they really had the portions right. The meat portions were more than enough to feed Chance, Finn and myself as well as my mum who was over for dinner.
Along with the box of goodies comes a booklet with the beautifully photographed recipes for your four night’s worth of meals and carefully laid out instructions on how to make each meal. I immediately scanned through them and was really happy with the variety of meals included and the range of different flavours and cuisines. We had Asian, Mexican, Italian and then you’re typical Aussie or Kiwi meal, meat, chips and salad.
We started the night off with the Chinese five spice stir-fry and read through the preparation. For each meal, everything you need is included, right down to the spices and garnishes. They only ask that you sometimes use staple pantry items that everyone should have already like olive oil for frying, brown sugar and soy sauce for the dressing. Each meal takes about 30 minutes from start to finish and the steps are really simple. HelloFresh also source their ingredients from local suppliers so they are of high-quality and you can tell by looking at the produce because of the size, quality and radiant colours.
As soon as I started, I could feel how much I was enjoying cooking again. It was making such a difference to have this recipe laid out for me with all the ingredients at my beckoning call without me having to think or stress about it. Not only that but it was saving me time. Something that is critical to many of us. I had dinner on the table by 7pm every night and we were all enjoying the variety. The stirfry was light and delicious and you could taste how fresh the ingredeints were. We each had a good-sized meal, which is important to me as I don’t like to be left feeling hungry after dinner so I was definitely satisfied. It was a thumbs up from us.
The next night we had ham & basil pizza and as a favourite meal in our house we had high expectations. HelloFresh did not disappoint. Simple, fresh ingredients, easy to prepare and ready in less than 30 minutes. I loved that Finn was also able to help with this, adding his ingredients to his pizza. It was super tasty and filling and so nice to change up our toppings from the same old stuff we used to have.
On night three, we had the dukkah crusted lamb steak, homemade chips and salad. The quality of the meat was superb and my meat-loving partner was impressed. This meal did take a little longer than stated because potatoes take that extra bit longer in the oven but it was again delicious and a really impressive portion of meat for each of us. Finn was thoroughly enjoying munching on his own big piece of steak!
On the last night, we had the beef fajitas. Once again, they followed the same principles as the other meals with simple, fresh ingredients resulting in a delicious meal that satisfied us all. It was wonderful already having the pre-packaged spices there to just tear open and add to the meal instead of scrawling through my cupboard trying to find each of them. So quick and easy!
Now for something like this you would be expecting it to cost you a lot of money but you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how affordable it is. For a family box it will cost you $139 for the four nights meals. When you factor in how much you’re spending on your groceries and the wastage that you’re probably contributing too, it isn’t an extra cost at all. They also offer fruit boxes, juice boxes for your weekly juice cleanses, classic boxes for couples or singles and vege box for vegetarians. Each week they have different recipes and there is such a wide variety that you’re taste buds will always be tantalised!
Overall, I was super impressed with the concept of HelloFresh and excited to share it with everyone I know. It offers a unique difference from the usual food delivery companies that send pre-packaged meals, because these guys allow you to cook everything from scratch bringing back the fun of cooking and the taste of good quality, fresh produce. The biggest selling point for me was the time and stress it saved me, making meal-time a lot more relaxed and enjoyable for everybody. I know I will be needing this when bub number two arrives and I encourage everyone else to give it a go. One try and you’ll be addicted!
